Sustainable Solution Description
As part of IMS TECHNOLOGIES' commitment to environmental sustainability, ROTOMAC - a brand of IMS TECHNOLOGIES has developed new technology for producing coreless rolls, integrated into its ICEBREAKER 167 rewinding machine. This innovation is a result of ROTOMAC's extensive expertise in the industry, as evidenced by its status as the world’s leading manufacturer of machinery for food wrapping rolls. ROTOMAC's reputation is further demonstrated by the presence of over 2,000 of its machines and solutions around the globe.
THE ICEBREAKER 167 and its coreless technology
The revolutionary ICEBREAKER 167 rewinding machine for coreless rolls falls into the ICEBREAKER SERIES: a range of automatic rewinding machines ensuring highest performance and a reduced environmental impact.
The underlying concept of the coreless technology is a snap: no more core, but a simple paper sheet at the heart of the roll. This innovation ensures higher quality rolls with a smoother surface and minimal wrinkles. Potentially, the use of paper sheets can be completely eliminated depending on the size of the roll, further enhancing the roll's positive impact on the planet.
Advantages of the coreless roll
Our coreless roll has many different advantages, all contributing to a sustainable packaging standard:
- LESS or NO PAPER USE: paper use is reduced by at least 73%, in case a simple paper sheet is put at the heart of the roll instead of the core. Paper sheet can also be avoided, depending on the size of the roll, thus enabling a 100% reduction of paper use. This results in considerable material optimization, with a positive impact on companies’ operating costs and, most importantly, on our planet.
- LESS CO2 EMISSION: with the coreless rolls there won’t be trucks for carrying cores: for the same number of rolls produced, the number of trucks needed to deliver paper sheets is 1/8 the number of trucks that would be necessary to transport traditional cores. This means an 87.5% reduction in carbon emissions from transport if paper sheets are used instead.
- NO DUST generation during the production process.
- NO ADHESIVE MATERIAL to glue aluminium and paper sheet together.
- LESS LOGISTICS AND STOCK COSTS: the absence of core unlocks substantial warehouse space savings for companies, thus ensuring a sharp reduction of 87.5% in stock and logistics costs.
- HIGHER QUALITY ROLLS: besides its countless environmental benefits, the coreless roll shines with unmatched quality, as demonstrated by its smoother and more uniform both external and internal surfaces.
Furthermore, the paper sheet inserted in the roll can be used as a powerful marketing tool: it can be customized in order to promote the company’s brand or to vehicle messages to the end-user. Finally, the paper sheet is easily recyclable, providing an additional environmental benefit.
ROTOMAC's coreless roll awarded for its commitment to a more sustainable world
ROTOMAC’s coreless roll has already been recognized in several competitions for its contribution to sustainability. In 2023, it won first place at the Sustainable Packaging News Awards, which annually highlights the most revolutionary and innovative sustainable solutions in the packaging market. That same year, the coreless technology was shortlisted as a finalist at the Sustainability Awards, a competition organized by Packaging Europe to honor notable innovations and projects in the packaging value chain and to encourage the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and best practices to reduce environmental impact.
ROTOMAC’s ICEBREAKER 167 rewinding machine for coreless rolls is just one of many efforts by IMS TECHNOLOGIES towards a more sustainable economy. We believe that SUSTAINABILITY IS THE CORE and we are proud to actively contribute to safeguard our planet!
